It’s the brand’s first coupe SUV which jumps on the fashion for sportier and less practical versions of regular SUVs which has been the reserve of brands like Audi and BMW until now. Based on the MEB platform and essentially the same as the VW ID.4 underneath, the ID.5 will come with a wide choice of powertrains, including a performance GTX version.
It’s a good basis to build upon, too, with both the Audi Q4 e-tron and aforementioned VW ID.4 being four-out-of-five-star cars in our experience with them. Space, range, and equipment are all top notch on the ID.4 and whilst some interior height will be sacrificed with the ID.5, its fundamental roominess will be retained judging by the images we have of a camouflaged pre-production version.
In fact, our only real gripe with the ID.4 is its unengaging drive and a general lack of excitement compared to some other SUVs on the market. With the ID.5, it would seem that Volkswagen is providing a solution – especially in 295bhp, dual-motor GTX form.
Looks-wise, the camouflaged car gives plenty away. There will be a liftback tailgate which has an integrated spoiler, below which is the LED light strip which meets in the middle at the central VW badge. 3D LED rear lights complete the look.
Whilst VW is yet to officially announce the drivetrain options, we do know that it will eventually be available with the same three power levels as the ID.4 with 168bhp and 201bhp in two-wheel drive form, and the 295bhp GTX all-wheel drive variant. Both battery sizes will also be available with the 52kWh unit at the lower end, and the 77kWh battery offering up to 309 miles of range at the higher end. It has been reported that maximum charging speed has been increased to 150kW DC.
We’d also expect that technology and equipment levels are broadly similar to the ID.4, which is no bad thing. Volkswagen is promising over-the-air updates and Car2X tech as standard on the ID.5.
Our expectation is that VW will release more detailed information during the IAA Munich Motor Show which starts on September 7.
