Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance gets 480bhp and will do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds

Ford has announced that it is adding a range-topping GT Performance version of its Mustang Mach-E to the line-up. Boasting 21bhp more than the regular GT, the Performance Edition takes the car's dynamic abilities up a level whilst still offering a respectable driving range.

As if the 459bhp and 612lb-ft that is set to be offered in the Mustang Mach-E GT wasn't enough, Ford has gone one step further by unleashing an additional 21bhp from its EV powertrain. The Mach-E GT Performance Edition will be the halo car in the range, offering 480bhp and 634lb-ft which delivers 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds, according to Ford's tests.

Obviously, drawing more power means that the GT Performance's range has suffered slightly compared to the GT and lower models. At an EPA-estimated 235 miles it's still plenty usable, though the results will likely differ when the car is put through the WLTP cycle.

Given the stated range, the GT Performance will be getting Ford's extended range 99kWh battery. As with the rest of the range the GT Performance will accept ultra-rapid DC charging at up to 150kW enabling it to be juiced from 10 to 80 per cent in less than an hour.

Not just straight-line speed

Ford hasn't just added more power to make the Mach-E GT Performance a traffic light hero; it has given the chassis a few tweaks. Behind the front wheels are larger Brembo brakes with red calipers. The wheels themselves have been specially designed for the GT Performance and come shod with big 245/45R20 Pirelli summer tyres. Damping is enhanced with Ford's MagneRide, so the handling should be as lively as the straight line performance.

GT Performance design highlights

Ford has given the Mach-E a few design cues to ensure that those who've shelled out the as-yet undisclosed sum to buy one will stand out from more lowly Mach-Es.

Inside, the front seats have been given the once-over by Ford Performance and are trimmed with Performance Grey ActiveX material with metallic stitching and some fancy reflective inserts. The instrument panel has been trimmed with aluminium and if onlookers weren't already clear in what they're looking at, there's a GT Performance Edition badge on the rear of the car.

Both the Mustang Mach-E GT and GT Performance Edition are available in signature Mustang colours. These include: Cyber Orange Metallic, Dark Matter Grey Metallic, Rapid Red Metallic, Star White Metallic, Grabber Blue Metallic, Shadow Black, Iconic Silver Metallic and Space White Metallic.

If you want to see what the Mach-E looks like in the flesh, read our event report from earlier this year. We'll take ours in Grabber Blue, though.

Availability

We're yet to find out how much the Ford Mustang Mach-E will retail for, let alone the GT and GT Performance models. However, it's due to reach Europe in late 2021 so this time next year, we may be able to tell you what it's like to drive.
